Chinese surgeon builds new nose on man's forehead

Beijing: A surgeon in China says he has constructed an extra nose out of a man's rib cartilage and implanted it under the skin of his forehead to prepare for a transplant in probably the first operation of its kind.

Surgeon Guo Zhihui at Fujian Medical University Union Hospital in China's southeastern province of Fujian spent nine months cultivating the graft for a 22-year-old man whose nose was damaged.

The striking images of the implant - with the nostril section facing diagonally upward on the left side of the man's forehead - drew widespread publicity after they began to circulate in Chinese media this week. Guo plans to cut the nose from the forehead while leaving a section of skin still connected, and then rotate and graft it into position in a later operation.

"We were just interested in helping the man and did not expect it would stir up this much attention," Guo said in an interview on Friday with The Associated Press.

Surgeons previously have used cartilage to help rebuild noses in their proper position and are experimenting with growing new ones from stem cells on other parts of the body, such as a forearm. But this was the first known case of building a nose on a forehead.

Alexander Seifalian, a professor of nanotechnology and regenerative medicine at University College London who has worked on transplants using stem cells, said implanting the nose graft in the forehead makes sense because the skin there has the same "structure and texture" as that of a nose.

However, he said it was unclear why the Chinese team built the nose on the forehead rather than in its proper position. A nose graft grown from stem cells would be prepared on another body part first, but this operation is using existing cartilage, Seifalian said.

"They could have made the nose and just put it on the nose, not in the forehead," Seifalian said. "I don't know why they put it there."

However, Seifalian noted that he had not seen any scientific information on the Chinese operation and was just going by media reports.

The patient lost part of his nose in an accident in August 2012 and did not immediately have any reconstruction surgery because he couldn't afford it, Guo said. An infection later ate away much of his nose cartilage, he said.

Guo said his team examined what remained of the nose and concluded there would be little chance of viably grafting cartilage there, instead building the nose on the forehead.

When the new nose is rotated into position and grafted, it will at first have its own blood supply from links to the forehead, before developing new blood vessels. Later surgery will smooth out all of the skin.

The team first expanded skin on the man's forehead for more than three months before using rib cartilage to build the nose bridge. Lastly, Guo's team built the nostrils.

"We sculpted the nose three-dimensionally, like carpenters," he said.

Black Henna Reaction 2

Black Henna Reaction

 black henna reaction

Many people these days, are inquiring about the death paste "Black Henna"; not knowing the dangers behind it!

First of all, Henna is -never- black. Natural henna is plant based, and only turns out in shades of orange, red, or a deep cherry maroon. Natural henna -never- stains black!

So what is "Black Henna"?
Black henna, is full of chemicals. Mainly a chemical called PPD (para-phenylenediamine), which is found in hair dye, rubber chemicals, polyurathane and Benzene (an ingredient found in gasoline).
This is what gives you the 'black' colour on your skin.
Imagine having all those chemicals run into your bloodstream when you let the deathpaste sit on your skin for hours and hours!

Also, the cones you find it stores, could also include all these chemicals. You can smell it right away! That's why it stains you right away, and it peels off right away! This, I've heard from many clients who use to those 'emergency' cones from their local stores. And that is why they're SO cheap to buy! Because they're made in bulk with all these harmful chemicals!
Natural henna will not have the darkest stain right away. It takes 24-48 hours for it to deepen to the darkest stain (about a deep cherry maroon/red). And it does not peel away so soon. It will be rich in colour for atleast 5-7 days until it slowly starts to fade away. And for it to be completely gone, it may take several weeks and sometimes even a month!

What can black henna do to you?
In worst cases, it can cause damage to your liver, kidney, and possibly cancer! It can also scar/burn you. Sometimes it's temporary but sometimes it can be permanent. Why risk that? When you can get absolutely gorgeous results from Natural henna!

If you're getting henna done at a local festival, fair, or even internationally while on vacation; you have all the rights to ask what is in the paste.
Mixing henna is no big secret. Any good, professional  henna artist will tell you what is in their paste.

NJ's Unique Henna Art does NOT use or support the use of 'black henna'.
Our paste is 100% natural and fresh.

We all have computers, laptops, ipads, phones which we can use the internet on. Please take a few minutes to just search on google "Dangers of black henna" and you'll be horrified by all the results!
And FYI, the use of black henna is illegal in Canada.

So, PLEASE stay away from 'Black Henna' and just stick with Natural henna!

Hope this helped and changed your view on black henna!

Animated Bike Wheel LED Lights

There are plenty of interesting ways to deck out your bicycle, but MonkeyLectric may have come up with the ultimate way to make it stand out on the road. The company's new Monkey Light Pro is a set of LED bars that attach to a bicycle wheel and can be programmed to play colorful animations.

This isn't the first light-up bicycle wheel system we've seen, and MonkeyLectric itself has produced other models in the past, but none have been as elaborate as this. Over the last two years, the company has been hand-making prototypes of the newer system for special events and projects. During that time, the developers practiced their manufacturing processes with smaller products until they felt ready to launch a more complex system.

The Monkey Light Pro features four bars sporting a total of 256 full-color LEDs, which fit together inside the spokes and display bright images over the entire wheel when it's in motion. Riders can upload still graphics or short animations via Bluetooth and watch them light up on both sides when the bike reaches 10 to 40 mph (15 to 65 km/h). The setup also includes a two-axis accelerometer and four magnetic sensors to track a wheel's speed and rotation, ensuring the images remain stable when speeding up, slowing down, and even riding backwards.

It's designed to fit any 26 in (66 cm) or larger bicycle wheel, and includes a stainless steel anti-theft strap to keep it secure. The system is constructed from a durable clear urethane, keeping it protected from water, vibrations, and general day-to-day use. A built-in lithium battery charges through USB, offering 3 - 8 hours of runtime at full brightness and up to 48 hours at a reduced level.
Un-mounted Monkey Light Pro prototype. 4 pieces insert inside the spokes and bolt together.
With a web-based program, users can create their own playlists of images for display, using their own files or a collection of pre-loaded animations from various artists. The software and API are also freely available to any programmers who want to experiment with other creations using the light system. Unfortunately, there's no app to control the display with a smartphone just yet, but the developers are hoping to secure funding to make that possible in the future.

MonkeyLectric is currently running a Kickstarter to finalize the design and bring it to production. At the moment, anyone who backs the project for US$695 or more will be among the first to receive the finished Monkey Light Pro, which is expected to ship in December of this year.
In the meantime, the video below shows some of the colorful and creative animations the Monkey Light Pro can display.

Birth of a Natural Pearl

The birth of a pearl is truly a miraculous event. Unlike gemstones or precious metals that must be mined from the earth, pearls are grown by live oysters far below the surface of the sea. Gemstones must be cut and polished to bring out their beauty. But pearls need no such treatment to reveal their loveliness. They are born from oysters complete -- with a shimmering iridescence, lustre and soft inner glow unlike any other gem on earth.

A natural pearl begins its life as a foreign object, such as a parasite or piece of shell that accidentally lodges itself in an oyster's soft inner body where it cannot be expelled. To ease this irritant, the oyster's body takes defensive action. The oyster begins to secrete a smooth, hard crystalline substance around the irritant in order to protect itself. This substance is called "nacre." As long as the irritant remains within its body, the oyster will continue to secrete nacre around it, layer upon layer. Over time, the irritant will be completely encased by the silky crystalline coatings. And the result, ultimately, is the lovely and lustrous gem called a pearl.

How something so wondrous emerges from an oyster's way of protecting itself is one of nature's loveliest surprises. For the nacre is not just a soothing substance. It is composed of microscopic crystals of calcium carbonate, aligned perfectly with one another, so that light passing along the axis of one crystal is reflected and refracted by another to produce a rainbow of light and color.

Cultured pearls share the same properties as natural pearls. Oysters form cultured pearls in an almost identical fashion. The only difference is a person carefully implants the irritant in the oyster, rather than leaving it to chance. We then step aside and let nature create its miracle.
